The Millennium Native Forest Reserve - Masterton
Well, here we are at the main entrance in Pownall Street. As we tour the Reserve we need to bear in mind that 17 years ago
this was
a 5.5 hectare
section of open paddocks (fields or meadows) with just a stand of oak trees in the middle and a few
other exotic trees.
Although this area is in the
centre of a residential area of Masterton it was found to be unsuitable for building
due to it being waterlogged
from eleven springs rising out of the
Masterton fault line and a stream flowing under Hillcrest Street.
The fault-line is a rise of several metres
and is the western boundary of the reserve.
